An exciting opportunity has become available to work within the Legal Services Department. The position is for an Assistant Lawyer (1.0 FTE).

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an Assistant Lawyer to work within the Planning & Highways Team (Legal Services). This role will provide legal and procedural advice and services in the most effective and efficient way to meet the requirements of the Council as a whole and specific Services and Departments.

The successful candidate will be working on a mix of Planning and Highway Law matters, supporting the wider team but also running a full caseload of files including drafting basic planning agreements and highways agreements, advising on the Highways Act 1980; dealing with (Temporary) Traffic Regulation Orders; reviewing documents to record decision making and supporting the wider team with Planning Enforcement matters. The successful candidate will also provide general advice to the client Planning and Highways departments on a range of legal matters and assisting more senior lawyers with administration and file management.

ABOUT YOU

You will have:

• a working knowledge/demonstrate a willingness to acquire knowledge of planning and highways law and legal procedure, together with an innovative, flexible approach to ensuring the delivery of a high quality legal service.
• the ability to work as part of a team and be flexible, enthusiastic and committed as the role will involve providing support to the senior lawyers in the team whilst managing you own caseload
• excellent communication skills, be able to work under pressure and to prioritise your workload to meet tight deadlines.
• the ability to work collaboratively with client departments to ensure good client relations.
• excellent drafting skills, the ability to provide concise and clear advice, negotiate and carry out legal research and analysis.
• The ability and willingness to expand your legal skills and apply yourself to novel areas of the team’s work which may not be currently within your own expertise.

You may be asked to assist with providing training to clients and stakeholders from time to time.

Experience gained in a Local Authority setting would assist but is not essential, as would an understanding of local government and administrative law.
