Head of Legal and Governance
(SP18) Head of Legal & Governance
Newcastle Under Lyme Council, Staffordshire
£53,645.00 – 59,618.00 Per Annum (Grade: JNC1)
Do you want to make a lasting impact on people’s lives?
It sounds like a bold statement, doesn’t it?
But, as Head of Legal & Governance for Newcastle Under Lyme Council, you will play a significant part in the future prosperity of this historic town.
The Council are modernising the way they operate and need to bring on board a new Head of Legal & Governance to ensure they are meeting their lawful obligations.
The CEO and Senior Leadership Team are all relatively new in their posts and share a collective desire to modernise the way the Council operates and provide the highest level of service possible to their constituents. They want you to share in that ambition and help them achieve it by being the principal legal adviser and also take the role of Monitoring Officer for the Council.
As Monitoring Officer, you will be the guardian of the Council’s standards. You’ll have the strength of character to ensure that the Council, Officers and Councillors all adhere to the standards you set, and not be afraid to challenge those who don’t.
Working with the Democratic Services Team, you’ll be involved with updating and reviewing the Council’s Constitution and delivering Democratic Services in line with statutory guidelines and best practice.
Given the nature of the role, there are some essential requirements you’ll need to meet. A Law Society Practising Certificate or Bar Standards Board Practicing Certificate are must-haves. Ideally, you’ll have a Law Society Diploma in Local Government Law and Practice as well.
You’ll have experience of working at a senior level within a local Council and understand how local authorities operate and, on occasion, work on evenings or weekends should there be a statutory deadline to meet.
There are many more aspects to this role to discuss so, get in touch with Sara Phillips or Heather Clarke on 01952 743243 or email info@harrisburns.com to receive a full information pack.
