An exciting opportunity has become available to work within the Legal Services Department. The position is for a Lawyer (1.0 FTE).

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Lawyer to work within the Litigation, Regulatory & Employment Team (Legal Services). This role will provide legal and procedural advice and services in the most effective and efficient way to meet the requirements of the Council as a whole and specific Services and Departments.
This role provides a range of legal support to the Principal Lawyer (team manager and direct report) and Senior Lawyer in conducting prosecutions and civil litigation on behalf of the Council. The role encompasses areas such as licensing, regulatory functions, trading standards, environmental health, education offences, highways, planning and housing. This post involves advocacy in the Magistrates’ and County courts, including contested hearings. The role will involve complex debt collection and commercial litigation and a track history of successful recovery in complex matters would be desirable.

ABOUT YOU

You will have:

• a good working knowledge of civil and criminal law and legal procedure, together with an innovative, flexible approach to ensuring the delivery of a high quality legal service.
• the ability to work as part of a team and be flexible, enthusiastic and committed as the role will involve providing support to the senior lawyers in the team whilst managing you own caseload
• excellent communication skills, be able to work under pressure and to prioritise your workload to meet tight deadlines.
• the ability to work collaboratively with client departments to ensure good client relations.
• excellent drafting skills, the ability to provide concise and clear advice, negotiate and carry out legal research and analysis.
• A good working knowledge of complex debt recovery is desirable.
• experience of advocacy is desirable as the post holder will have conduct of matters within the work areas described above.
• The ability and willingness to expand your legal skills and apply yourself to novel areas of the team’s work which may not be currently within your own expertise.

You may be asked to provide training to clients and stakeholders from time to time.

Experience gained in a Local Authority setting would assist but is not essential, as would an understanding of local government and administrative law.
