We are looking for a high calibre lawyer to join our busy but well-regarded legal team.  This post offers the opportunity for a lawyer either looking for the opportunity to gain experience as a manager, whilst still carrying out complex case and advisory work, or equally one already in this position looking to develop further, in readiness for the next step up to a senior legal level in a complex public sector organisation. The post is also ideal for those who want to broaden their local authority experience by managing a team providing diverse advice to the Council

Reporting to the Council’s Head of Legal Services, you will lead the General Law Team on issues surrounding the very varied litigation and potential challenges which may arise from the Council’s services,  carry out advocacy in the range of court, inquiry and tribunal venues and/or lead on project, contractual planning and highways or property matters. You will be a highly accomplished and robust litigator, advisor, drafter and negotiator  with a positive attitude and a practical and resilient approach to legal work.

You will deal with ombudsman complaints, data protection and freedom of Information requests, previous experience for which is desirable but not essential. You will also   be capable of providing advice and assistance arising out of all public law and service matters.

You will also have strong managerial skills to support and develop your team of officers and be able  to promote collaborative and effective  working relationships with the council’s services.

We seek candidates with at least 3 years PQE or equivalent. This job is based in Ashton-under-Lyne, which is 10 minutes by train from central Manchester, and the Council operates a working from home policy and flexible working week.
