As the Department for Education’s recent Green Paper signals a period of reform for all those involved with supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), an exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist SEND lawyer to work closely with the Council’s SEND team, advising and representing the Council in this area of work.

The role involves supporting the Council’s SEND team to meet its statutory obligations and representing the Council as required. The role holder will need to have a strong expertise in SEND legislation and will be responsible for day to day liaison with the client team including:

Preparing applications
Drafting documents and correspondence
Commissioning and instructing expert witnesses
Liaising with witnesses
Attending client meetings
Providing advice and representation in courts or tribunals

The Candidate will be a solicitor who is proficient in Special Educational Needs and have the following attributes:
Highly organised and a strong communicator with the ability to explain complex matters in clear manner
Excellent attention to detail
Committed to improving outcomes for children and young people
Resilient and able to prioritise caseloads, work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Work as part of a team and adopt a partnership approach to meet the holistic needs of the child or young person
Be thorough and up-to-date on the knowledge of SEN education legislation
Have excellent presentation and communication skills
