The Role

We are looking for a highly motivated law graduate or equivalent with LPC to join us to
develop the legal skills required to practice as a solicitor and to assist in the provision of legal services to the Council.

The successful candidate will undertake practical training and under supervision develop the legal skills required to practice as a solicitor to assist in the provision of legal services to the Council. They will be supervised by a principal in accordance with the terms of the Training Contract with the Law Society and under the day-to-day supervision of the relevant Principal Lawyer.

We seek to develop where possible our own lawyers to provide high quality advice and representation to the Council, Officers and Elected Members.

Working as part of a team, you will provide advice and effectively conduct legal matters relating to adults, children, corporate and environment matters. The work is varied and challenging with the opportunity to undertake advocacy in the magistrates and county court. You will undertake 4 seats, one in each team and will do a wide variety of work alongside having the opportunity to learn about the complexities of working in a political environment and how local authorities operate. We are lucky to have strong administrative support. Personal development is promoted, with opportunities to increase knowledge and experience alongside mentoring and peer support. We are a close-knit team, working collaboratively with colleagues across services to promote best practice and outcomes.

About You

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background and an understanding of how local government operates. Paralegal experience would be helpful as would the ability to work to deadlines, analyse issues and develop solutions to problems by working collaboratively.

You must have excellent communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and be able to present complex information in a range of accessible formats. You will have the confidence to work independently whilst knowing when to ask for support or guidance.
